Why should one go for Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)?

By Jakob Jelling

What are cascading style sheets? In technical words it is the standard rules in W3C for customizing and formatting web sheets. In simple words it gives you the capability to separate the lay out and the style from the data part of web sheets. This helps in increased accessibility and readability of the document. It also gives you more flexibility and control over the document. It consists of defining the font size, color of the test, style of the text, margins, spacing etc. The main language, which makes use of these, is the HTML family consisting of XHTML, DHTML and XML.

Now comes the real question that why cascading style sheets are necessary? The answer is simple and straight forward, yes. Prior to cascading style sheets you have to write the entire presentational attribute as a part of your HTML document. All borders, size, fonts need not to be explicitly defined but also have to be written repeatedly in the middle of the document. It not only made the code long and complex but also reduced the readability and flexibility. But the introduction of CSS solved these problems. With CSS you can write all the presentable attributes together at one place in a form of a style sheet.

It greatly reduced the code length and greatly simplified the document together with increased readability. This also reduces the document size so that it is easily and rapidly transmitted through websites. This leads to reduction in web traffic and therefore increases the speed of downloads.

With cascading style sheets you have the option of attaching it explicitly with the HTML document or embedding it in the document itself. The former style is more preferred as it keeps the data and style apart. You can also define different styles with regard to different output media. For example you can produce two entirely different style sheets, one visible on the screen while other can be the printable version.

It lets you to develop the web page according to your needs and requirements and in a way that it looks attractive. But as everything in computer has a well-prescribed rule so has cascading style sheets and for the best result you should always follow them. For making the best use of the available option you should first try to get knowledge of all the things and then should not hesitate in trying things out. The more you experiment, the more you will learn.

Cascading style sheets rules are very simple and easy to learn. You won’t feel the need to mug up these rules. You will automatically learn these rules if you practice for few days. But CSS also suffers with several limitations such as absence of expressions, vertical control limitation etc. Nevertheless the positives of CSS always over shadow the negatives. The last point is that if you are willing to learn and experiment than CSS can offer you many things.
