The Internet: Everyman's outlet store

Every day we hear talk about hundreds or thousands of people joining this business opportunity or that one, either striking it rich or losing big. It seems like these opportunities are a dime a dozen these days, which is both a good and a bad thing.

The bad news is that a lot of these business ventures never really offer the kind of earnings they claim. There are a lot of scams out there, and a lot of people have lost hundreds or thousands of dollars.

The good news is that businesses on the Web are still booming. For every online business out there, there are a dozen more ways to make money that no one has thought of yet. But there's one very simple Internet business model that a lot of people overlook when searching for a way to make a profit: sell merchandise!

Sell merchandise? Yes. I know that everyone and their dog seems to be doing it already, but I'm talking about selling real stuff: tangible, physical products that people actually want. There are plenty of online stores out there already, but that's okay, because there are millions and millions and MILLIONS of people out there just clamoring to buy it up. There can't possibly be too many online stores to fill up that demand.

If you've been considering joining someone else's business opportunity, don't dismiss doing it the old-fashioned way: make your own! First, get a domain name and have it hosted (it really costs very little). Then buy up some product from online wholesalers, community surplus, yard sales, you name it. Take pictures of your merchandise, set a price, upload a picture, and bam! You're making money. Thanks to services like PayPal or Yahoo!PayDirect, you don't even need a merchant account to rake it in.

Offer common products at terrific deals, unique products not easily found elsewhere, or merchandise you make yourself in your garage. It doesn't have to cost a lot of money or take over your life.

The Internet is all about ingenuity. It's about enabling the common man to do great things for himself and those living a world away. Be creative, think of something to sell, and do it. You might be surprised at the results you get.
